Frequently Asked Questions
Burning questions and cool, quenching answers. FAQs are a sly way of giving the gist of Daughter of God's soul. These are the most wanted wonderings, what we'd wish you'd ask. All the better if our questions sync up with your curiosity.
If there are other concerns or queries you'd like to see addressed here, operators are standing by via email (the [AT] dog [DOT] movie) and on most of your favorite flavors of social media.
Is this Keanu Reeves's cop thriller from 2015, Korean director Nam-su Park's Yahweui dal, from 1986, or that obscure Indian film from 1928...
Which Daughter of God?
A whole website and social media deployment, podcast, email list... Just freaking show us the movie!
Why the big buildup?
There's a podcast here, neat! Conversations by clever people about interesting topics don't have to be experienced sequentially, right? Is jumping around OK?
How is the podcast optimized?
I suppose "featurette" is some kind of short feature, but I thought "open source" referred to computer software...
What do "open source" and "featurette" mean?
An unconventional use of pronouns is prevalent here, lots of "we" and "us." Either this is a subtle nudge to a higher awareness or the director is hearing voices in his head.
Does the director hear voices in his head?
There's a rumor that Dan Kelly is some super upbeat, optimistic, visionary, accentuate-the-positive, groovy guru. Yet the warnings and caveats peppered through this web presence seems to imply the movie is packed with horrors and sin.
How do intensity and awareness jibe?
Yet another post apocalyptic movie, perhaps the most apocalyptic! At least that's the dream. But... There are more than enough troubles in the real world without adding imaginary ones.
Why another post apocalyptic movie?
Why the big buildup?
Because Daughter of God is more than a mere movie! Daughter of God is a guide to the flowering of full bliss for all beings! That's the gist.
Any hack with a smartphone can make a movie, maybe even make a living making movies. We're after bigger fish. What's wanted is triggers, catalysts for bringing on the worldwide big love. Hot! Eleven Thirteen years of intense Dan Kelly focus isn't something to be trifled with, folks. That's a significant wad of zero point mojo. We gotta ease into this. We gotta prepare the planet a little bit.
Which Daughter of God?
Is this the Keanu Reeves cop thriller from 2016, Korean director Nam-su Park's Yahweui dal from 1986 or that obscure Indian film from 1928?
The gist? An altogether other movie!
Episode 004.1 of the Daughter of Godcast unveils the curious connection to the 2015 Keanu Reeves and Mira Sorvino project that was retitled Exposed in 2016. You can't make this shit up!
I'll eventually check out the two pre-'90s productions, and maybe podcast about their vibratory influence along with tangentially related movies like the star-packed Dogma from 1999 and The Da Vinci Code, 2006.
What's available right now?
Our crack team of avatars, precogs, and psychohistorians will decide what to drop and when, depending on (1) groupie acquisition (2) apparitions in the sky, (3) behavior of cats across the internet, (4) availability of fresh local produce, and (5) the proximity of the writer-director to his energetic escrow. Here's the abridged list of what's in the queue.

The gist is that like all thoroughly modern cinematic achievements, somewhere in the scintillating spectrum of experience that is Daughter of God, there is a movie.
How is the podcast optimized?
Unlike other rambling podcasts where you can jump in anywhere, Daughter of Godcast is a progressive narrative and a gradual full disclosure. Therefore, the professionals at Daughter of Godcast Central Control advise you to enjoy the podcasts sequentially, starting from Episode 001. However, there are usually recaps at the beginning of each episode, and the episodes pretty much stand on their own, so do whatever feels good. Also, the episode pages are often chock-full of supplemental media, like pics and movies, and a fairly accurate transcription.
The gist is... have fun.
What do "open source" and "featurette" mean?
Daughter of Godcast's take on open source for movies is the sharing of content and ideas to facilitate distribution and collaboration. This follows the philosophy of the writer Cory Doctorow (more at craphound.com). If we offer content at low or no cost, many more people can find and enjoy Daughter of God than if we attempt traditional distribution schemes like movie theaters and on-demand services. Plus, traditional may not even be an option; DOG could be just too weird for mainstream distribution. Rather than fighting pirates, why not give them a hug? If the content is available to be repurposed, perhaps someone will make a subtitled version in Serbian. Reuse is interesting! Anyone who wants to tinker with our content could be a potential collaborator, peeps we'd maybe like to meet and drink ginger tea with.
Featurette is a short feature, between 24 and 40 minutes, often associated with documentaries. Daughter of God morphed from 10 minutes to over 24 after Ndong Essinga sparked an epic spree of world building. Actually, Maho Sone sparked and Ndong poured on the petrol. All is revealed in the podcasts!
The Cannes Film Festival requires a feature to be over 60 minutes, while the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences defines a feature as longer than 40 minutes.
The current length of Daughter of God is still slightly in flux but should be around 60 minutes after test screening is complete.
Does the director hear voices in his head?
Dan Kelly usually writes in the plural because over the course of production, many, many people have helped. As the one thread of continuity through the entire project, Dan is the de facto voice of the collective, and he is ever mindful of crew, cast, advisers, kibitzers, and most significantly, audience. Everyone matters. We are all the voices in his head. When he listens, especially on nights when the setting moon leaves a sparkling trail on the rippling water of Crystal Lake, he hears us as a surging otherworldly chorus, like a snippet of Neptune from Holst's The Planets.
The gist? The director might be a little balmy.
How do intensity and awareness jibe?
The movie and the making of the movie are different things. In deciding to make Daughter of God, I blew through decades of my own supposed limitations, jumped where there were no nets and generally embarked on a crazy and sometimes dangerous adventure. Telling the story(s) of the making of Daughter of God means opening up, being available, talking about those dark days when I was slightly less than triumphant and scintillating. Offering this story as clearly as I can recall is not only fun for me, but is a sort of celebration. I made a movie! I'm still breathing! So there's the optimism part.
Daughter of God tinkers with the standard post apocalypse trope. What does the shit hitting the fan for the whole human race reveal about the interplay between love and trauma, humor and hardship? Heck, everyone's gonna get their ass kicked, otherwise why bother visiting this glorious cosmic theme park we call Earth? Why do we cling so tenaciously to staying here? What's this being alive thing all about anyway? These are the most exciting and enlivening questions other than... where can I get a steaming stack of scrumptious vegan pancakes?
Pancakes are gist incarnate.
Why another post apocalyptic movie?
Why is this my very favorite question? Because three years into the making of Daughter of God I had a crisis. Why was I making a movie about apocalypse when I could/should be focusing all my energy on healing the earth, on waking up, on examining the suicidal decisions my fellow humans seemed to be making? I abandoned Daughter of God for almost ANOTHER three years because I didn't have an answer. Now I do.
People get paralyzed by fear. I think the insecurity of whether or not there's even going to be a future for humans on earth is so scary that most people just shut down. Or, they feel it's a matter of changing massive institutions like governments or corporations through the passing of laws, lobbying, and voting.
My view is this... There's only one way anything excellent ever happens, and that's by changing how each of feels and thinks, and what each of us then does. As individuals. The universe of Daughter of God is quirky and weird, and with a little luck, audiences might find it funny. Daughter of God is not only post apocalyptic, it's the most apocalyptic movie EVER.
Every awful scenario ever imagined in novels, on-screen, or by science has happened, in spades. Yet, life on earth has adapted. Those who remain are getting by, dreaming, and even falling in love. The words that stop us in our tracks, cause us to seize up and shut down, those words are drained of their power by watching Daughter of God. By passing through our worst fears and then moving way beyond, we might then be able to find better feelings in this timeline, our so-called reality, and allow more creative thoughts and actions that move us not only toward survival, but thrival, right now.
If you listen to the Daughter of Godcast podcast, you'll learn about my journey to become a thriving human being. I've come a very long way, yet am still a fabulous work in progress.
Post apocalypses and explicit podcasts about overthrowing the government are scrumptious subterfuge — that's the gist, or as gisty as it gets.
